Week Nine Social Tagging

The De.licio.us website is great for centrally locating all your favourite websites and being able to log on to them from any computer.
When exploring the site I found that I could go down many different pathways by clicking on the tags available or by typing in my own tags.
People categorise things in different ways. Some tags are too general to be of any use and I found that my interpretation (definition) of a tag didn't always match the thoughts of other users.

Using De.licio.us for research may supply relevant information but the more traditional methods may reveal the information faster and more accurately. I feel the main use for this tool is an easy way to create bookmarks that can be accessed from anywhere.

Second Life

I watched "You only live twice" - interesting for those who like to spend a lot of time

a) on the internet and

b) in their imagination, wishing things were different or "better" than they are in their "real" world.

The links to Kathryn Greenhills presentation slideshow didn't happen whichever way I tried to access them. Wonderful computer technology!

I watched some related Youtube videos. Again I got the impression that people have too much time on their hands to "play" on the internet.

I know libraries are trying to reduce the number of their staff by using the latest technology but I feel being able to ask an actual Librarian in the flesh(real world) can not be improved upon if the Librarian knows their job.

Churchlands 2008

Churchlands Library is now getting very empty.Trolly loads of books are being withdrawn and disposed of. Below are some images that are looking very desperate for a working library!
I think I've managed to post these images to the flikr site "eculibraryweb".

Wiki Week
Having had a look at several wiki sites I followed the instructions to the hot issues on Blackboard. I could post a comment but found I couldn't edit anything which I understood was the name of the game. Joseph also had this problem. I looked up the other Blackboard Library Wiki and found they had the appropriate links. No doubt this will be remedied in the near future.
I discovered that some other wikis in the big wide world require extra identification from people who want to edit them. People who vandalise and scam material are making this necessary. I wouldn't have thought that this was the case with Hot Issues at ECU Libraries

Adding wiki functionality to library catalogs would allow users to to make the entries more user friendly. e.g. Synopses and reviews of books as well as pictures of the cover for easy identification (especially with fiction in public libraries).

RSS feeds

Having set up my bloglines account I now have to have time to add to it and to read the information that arrives. As noticed elsewhere by participants we can spend a lot of time "surfing" looking for appropriate feeds.
Maureen is very good at making suggestions and she makes the exercises look easy as well. I'm still working on the "academic aspect" ebsco /emerald connections but at least I know how to do it. Time is important to make it second nature.

Dear all,
I've managed to get this far with the task at hand. Relatively easy if you can decide on a display name, blog name and address for same. I'm of the opinion that once something is down in black and white that it is set in stone. No doubt some of the exercies that we will be required to do will change my mind.
There are a lot of things even on this "creating blog comments page" that I need to explore, however we're only suppossed to spend 1/2-1 hour a week getting to grips with all this so our work doesn't suffer.
